Eulogy

The following eulogy was delivered by Victoria’s son Justin Stephenson

Justin Stephenson

Mum loved us all very much and all of us could not have asked more of her. She was the rock within our family, the one providing unconditional love and support whenever any of us needed it.

Justin Stephenson

Thank you all for coming today to pay your respects to my very special Mum, Victoria. I know Mum would be touched by how many people are present today. Those close to her are not surprised because she provided so much love and friendship to so many people over her lifetime.

Mum kept positive about life right until the end. She fought extremely hard through her last stages of cancer and we wish to acknowledge the incredible care and support that Doctor Fitzpatrick and the staff at Aegis Parkview Aged Care provided — in particular thank you to Susan and Tom. You are all very special people.

Mum was the first born child to Brian and Barbara Stephenson in Applecross in 1935. Then over the next 8 years her siblings Andrew, Maryanne and Justine were born.

Schooling for Mum was at the local schools where she achieved above average marks. Upon leaving school she joined McCarthy Accountancy Firm in Applecross. At the time she didn't know it but that decision was to change her life. She met and fell in love with Dad who was one of the junior Accountants at the firm who went on to become a Principal.

A couple of years later they married and moved to Parkwood. They then started their family shortly after. Margaret was the first born in 1958, myself in 1961, Phillip in 1963 and then Sue in 1966. Four kids under 8! We went on to enjoy many family times together and some wonderful holidays to Margaret River, Broome, Mandurah, Noosa, Broome, Sydney, Fiji, New Zealand, Melbourne, Cairns and only a couple of years ago all of us kids and grandchildren were delighted when Mum and Dad said that they would join us in New York for 2 weeks. We all had a wonderful time together, so many laughs and the opportunity to enjoy one another's company. This was to be the last of our family holidays as Dad died only a few months later and then not long after Dad died Mum was diagnosed with cancer.

Mum was an avid gardener and together with Dad would spend endless hours looking after their beautiful Garden at home. She enjoyed her morning swim at either the beach or in the family pool. She and Dad enjoyed walking, playing golf with many of their friends, doing the crossword together and enjoying a glass or two of Sauvignon Blanc or a cocktail on the balcony.

Mum had a wonderful group of friends, including close friends Tom and Claire Nelson, William and Judith Hayley and Kate and John Williamson. Our families shared many Christmas camping trips at Lucky Bay and Cape Range National Park. Endless days in the water, BBQ dinners, lots of cricket, footy, cards and soaking up the sun.

Mum was delighted when the grandkids entered her life. She would happily babysit them, play games with them, teach them, pass on her wisdom to them but above all she provided them with unconditional love, support and friendship throughout their lives. Jessie, Lily, Olivia, Felix, Sam, Emma and Charlotte are all going to miss their Nana but they will never forget the influence she have had on their lives.

Losing a loved one is the most difficult thing we can go through and Mum I already miss you and know that I will have you in my thoughts every day.

I wish to finish my eulogy by saying:

My mother was one of the most beautiful and amazing people I have ever met and will probably ever meet. She had an incredible impact on my life and who I am today, her values are the same values that I try and live by. She spent her life caring for others; she never put herself before others. She would often go out of her way to extend love and support to those who were in need. I knew I could approach her no matter what the reason or circumstance and that she would provide the support I needed. I loved her with all my heart and will truly miss her.

Rest in peace Mum now that you are reunited with Dad, the love of your life.
